Teaching Kindness: Neighborhood Tree

Teaching Kindness: Neighborhood Tree

This month our theme for homeschooling is “Kindness”. While we patiently wait for our Kindness elves to appear we are doing what we can around our neighborhood. We have been talking a lot about animals and how they are adjusting to the shorter, colder days. After some brainstorming and window watching we decided we would like to do something kind for the birds and animals in our neighborhood. We are lucky to live in a neighborhood with lots of trees, parks, and water so we have a healthy ecosystem right in our yard.

We talked about some examples of kindness that have been done onto us which lead us to the consensus that treats are always good idea. But what kinds of treats would the animals like? Certainly not cookies and bubblegum. After much consideration we decided on popcorn and fruit. We dried some apples and oranges in the oven which made the house smell delicious. Then we used our fine motor and patterning skills to make popcorn-cranberry chains. We decided to decorate a tree in our neighborhood park so both animals and our neighbors could enjoy the holiday spirit.

We hope there are some happy squirrels and birds chirping around our neighborhood. What is your favorite ways to show kindness during the holiday season? We are always looking for new ideas on how to share peace and kindness this time of year. Follow us on Instagram for more holiday spirit ideas!
